Over the last year, Snapchat has emerged as my #1 most engaging social media network to connect with my audience around the world.

It’s a ground-breaking platform, which has allowed me to show a behind-the-scenes perspective of my life as a full-time and enable my followers to get to know me on a personal level.  You wouldn’t believe how many snaps I get everyday from people saying, “I feel like I know you personally from watching your snapchats!”

I like to think of my Snapchat channel as hosting my own Travel TV Show – especially in today’s world, where everyone is glued to their phone screens and Snapchat is slowly overtaking the role of television among millennials. I mean, who really watches regular TV anymore? I sure don’t, and most of my friends don’t either.

Snapchat was already the fastest growing application in 2014 & 2015, and today, there are over 140 million active users sending 1o+ billion snaps every day.

It’s almost like people are carrying me around with them in their pocket — whether they are sitting on the toilet, waiting in line at the supermarket, or just laying in bed. It’s pure entertainment in the form of my hands, and it’s highly addicting.

So you want to grow a bigger following on Snapchat? You want to use the platform to influence, connect with and inspire others around the world?

Here are my 8 Best Snapchat Tips that will take your Snapping to a new Level:

1. Post often & consistent

Try to post at the same times everyday, so your followers can look forward to your snaps. Don’t undersnap – if people are following you, then they are genuinely interested to see what you are doing… so it’s your job to entertain them!

That being said, don’t oversnap either. Find that appropriate number — I personally think 15-25 snaps per story is ideal.

2. Find the balance talking & showing

Nobody wants to look at your face blabbering about random stuff on every snap, and likewise, nobody wants to be overloaded with snaps of ice cream or your new shoes.   Try to find that balance.

I prefer to show my face about 20% of the time.  For example, if my Snap story has 20 total snaps, I will show my face in about 4 of them.

Obviously, this is totally up to you — but I find that showing activities more than showing your face has the highest level of engagement.

3. Know your audience

Who is watching your snaps? Try to plan stories that they would find interesting. For example, I know that 90% of my followers are interested in travel, so it would be pointless if I started showing snapchats of my dog everyday.

Knowing your audience is key for establishing a good and trustworthy relationship between your followers.

4. Have an objective & plan ahead

When I first started snapping, I used to wander around countries and show everything that I came across. 24/7. But I’ve come to realize that this is BOTH a waste of my time and my viewers’ time to consume.

Plan your snaps ahead and remember that your snaps will show in a timeline (although you may forget that when you’re snapping).

For example, if you know you are going to a music festival, then think ahead of what people will find interesting and focus on showing that.  Don’t show 5 snaps in a row of the stage, beacuse that is really boring to watch. Instead, do one snap of the stage and show other fun things that you come across (food, people, etc).

5. Use Music, Geo-filters & Emojis

Music & geo-filters are what sets Snapchat apart from all other social media platforms. Take advantage of the ability to customize each snap you make by adding emojis and drawing on the screen. Playing music in the background provides a whole new element and feel to your snaps. And geo-filters are fun to use – they are like the “proof” that you are actually in that location or event — like a passport stamp!

6. Include your followers in your Snapchat Story

Encourage people to snap you back. Play games, give out prizes, ask questions – get them involved!

Every week, I play this game called “Where in the World are You?” Where I ask people to snap me back with “Geo-tags” of their location, and I share all of them on my story. People love to feel involved, and it gives them more of an incentive to follow you.

7. Be Yourself

Be true to yourself and let your personality shine through — that is why people will follow you. On Instagram and Twitter, you can create an illusion and be someone else than what people think you are. But that’s impossible on Snapchat, because people can hear your voice and see your face.

Are you a funny person? Tell jokes! Use comedy. Are you a sarcastic person? Be sarcastic.

If you are introverted and scared of the camera, then Snapchat might not be the best fit for you.

8. Keep it Fun

I think we can all agree that Snapchat is the most fun and entertaining social media out there. I actually enjoy every minute of Snapchatting!!

Keep your snaps fun and exciting. Don’t be boring, or else nobody will want to follow you. Get in the minds of your audience and think, “What would I want to see?”
